GOP Searching For a Candidate
If the GOP base had to pick a candidate for 2008, so far it seems it would be "none of the above" according to a recent poll.
The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that nearly a quarter of Republicans are unwilling to back top-tier hopefuls Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain or Mitt Romney, and no one candidate has emerged as the clear front-runner among Christian evangelicals. Such dissatisfaction underscores the volatility of the 2008 GOP nomination fight. (Townhall )
Republicans are waiting for a candidate who inspires them and motivates the base. Because of the socially moderate views of McCain, Giuliani, and the flip-flopping past of Mit Romney, no candidate seems to be rising to the occasion. Fred Thompson was expected to generate excitement but has yet to do so.
This seems to open the door to another entry from a solid conservative candidate with a record of achievement. Enter Newt Gingrich. Gingrich has said that he will make a decision on whether to run in late September of this year. Perhaps a late entry, but not too late to win by any means.
Newt would be a candidate of ideas. The Democrats have no new ideas. Universal health care and defeat in Iraq won't win elections. But Giuliani, Thompson, or McCain have not produced ideas that have captured the GOP base either. On the other hand, New Gingrich is able to effectively articulate the weaknesses of government bureaucracy and the changes that are needed to better serve the American people into the 21st century.
Newt has often been called an idea machine, it could be this strength that propels him into the race for 2008 and into the GOP nomination.

Although I like Thompson of the announced candidates, I question if he's got the hunger. I remember the 60 election. Lodge had the great resume'as the VP but, was accused of being a 9 to 5 candidate. I'm hoping for a "pit bull" candidate.
